Extension to an existing 1,200 sq. ft. house and a multifunctional space in the rear in the Silverlake hills.
Because of zoning limitations the extension has to be suspended a level lower than the main house. The circulation that makes most sense to both levels runs perpendicular to the house, in line with the existing corridor. The need to provide head clearance resulted in a raised staircase volume with a vertical window which becomes the defining feature of the new extension.
The carport below receives a green roof, thus providing a floating lawn to be enjoyed from inside. The extension also provides a new deck for the living area on the third floor as well as a new defined main entry.
